Exalting the Hyper Cube in Bejeweled 2 Deluxe
Ive been a closet Bejeweled 2 Deluxe addict for the last three or so years. I play Bejeweled on my computers at home. I play Bejeweled online, and I play it on my laptop when Im on the road. Were it not for cell phone signals in my area, I would probably have an iPhone, because Bejeweled 2 is now available for it.
Why have I stayed hidden? Well, as an adult in this universe, it just didnt seem right to be hooked on a game that matched three or more colored gems only to have more colored gems fall from above to be matched until no more matches could be made. It wasnt logical to need to have this simple game available to me whenever I needed it.
Ive decided, however, that I cant possibly be alone in my addiction, and that others secretly sneak off for a break from the daily grind for a little Bejeweled me time. Im venturing out to admit my love of the game and try to explain the draw that it has for me.
I thought when I broke 100,000 points that I must be the Queen of Bejeweled because it took me so long to get there. Then I thought when I surpassed 200,000 points that Id reached Bejeweled nirvana. But when I crossed the half million mark, I knew I had to try for a million, then two, three, four, five, six and now Ive set my sites for infinity (and beyond).
At one point, though, I realized that is wasnt just the luck of the falling gems that helped me gain higher and higher scores. It was the ability to create and hold onto hyper cubes the special gem created when a five-gem match is made. Its the rarest of matches and doesnt occur with much regularity, but having one, two or more in the Bejeweled 2 window, provided me with a sense of power and a knowledge that as long as it was there, I wouldnt hear the arresting Game Over words from the baritone-voiced narrator.
Having a hyper cube was like knowing that the cavalry waited on the hill in the distance for my signal to come to my rescue. It was like having Dudley DoRight ready to hop on Horse and chase Snidely Whiplash away from Nell Fenwick in time to save her from the oncoming train. It was like knowing that Superman was waiting in case I suddenly fell out of a 30 story building.
As long as I had a hyper cube, I knew the game couldnt end. And the sound that announced the creation of a hyper cube only added to that sense of confidence. It was like the sound announcing that Grasshopper had finally taken the stone from the hand of Master Po. All of the other gem-matching sounds ranged from bings to clinks to clashes to crashes, but a five-gem match sounded like that of a calm mastery of the game.
My strategy became one of identifying potential hyper cubes, creating them, and then protecting them with positioning, gem diversionary tactics and calculated saves. It became a game of protection, which in turn became a game of wildly high scores. And one day, I looked at my list of scores and said to myself, Dang, Girl, youre good at this! And the fun part was that I didnt have to be Rainman to finally get it.
So I exalt the hyper cube. Im a testament to the possibilities, and hope that I can provide encouragement to the struggling Bejeweled 2 Deluxe or Bejeweled online game player. The possibilities are there, Grasshopper. The game awaits you.
